Part 1: Erase the Mac
If you can still log in to the Mac
- Sign in to the Mac with an admin account.
- Open System Settings.
- Go to General.
- Click Transfer or Reset.
- Click Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the administrator password if prompted.
- Follow the prompts to completely erase the Mac.
If you cannot log in
- Shut down the Mac.
- Boot into Recovery.
- On Apple silicon: press and hold the power button until Options appears.
- Open Disk Utility if needed and erase the internal disk, or use the recovery options to reinstall macOS.
- Reinstall macOS until the Mac reaches the Setup Assistant screen.
Part 2: Add the Mac to Apple Business Manager with Apple Configurator for iPhone
- On your iPhone, install and open Apple Configurator.
- Sign in with a Managed Apple Account that has the proper ABM permissions. Apple says the account should have the role of Administrator or Device Enrollment Manager.
- Start the erased Mac and leave it at the Setup Assistant.
- Move through Setup Assistant on the Mac until you reach the country/region screen or the point Apple requires for pairing. Apple lists Setup Assistant requirements for adding a Mac this way.
- On the iPhone, in Apple Configurator, choose the option to add the Mac to Apple Business Manager.
- Hold the iPhone near the Mac when prompted.
- Scan the pairing image or animation shown on the Mac screen with the iPhone.
- Wait while Apple Configurator registers the Mac in ABM.
- If prompted, choose the MDM server you want to assign the Mac to, or choose the default one. Apple says Apple Configurator for iPhone can present the linked device management services during the add process.
- Finish the process and wait for confirmation that the Mac was successfully added.
